Let me introduce an ordinary story of an Extraordinary and Beautiful human being!
”Being true to yourself and your work is an asset. Remember that assets are worth protecting.”…
Founder of ‘Just Listening To You’ (Community Mental Health Support Group), Inspirational Writer, Mental Health Activist, Group Leader, a Loving Wife & Mother, and a Wonderful woman, Bernie Bentley was extremely close to her Nan from a very young age and both deeply cared for each other.
She remembers visiting her in a hospital and seeing her for the last time, knowing it was unlikely she would see her alive again. And, she was right – it was her very last time!
For many reasons, her Nan was like a trusted parent whom, she had always longed for.
In her young teens Bernie belonged to a church group.
On one occasion she witnessed a homeless man knocking on the priests door and the priest refused to give him food.
The door shut and the man walked away.
When the priest was out of sight, Bernie grabbed some food from the pantry, ran after the homeless man and gave it to him. Being humble, he only accepted two items, he pointed to his pockets with holes in, he had nowhere to store it.
This extraordinary experience has enriched her life and it mirrors her support to various charities.
At the age of 41 she experienced a stroke; her mobility threatened, depression heightened and her very way of life left in tatters; her life has never been the same again.
With a number of additional health drawbacks, she finds life a constant challenge; a longterm battle with depression fought valiantly; the thought of the impending winter months that hide S.A.D., the dark mornings and evenings are extremely challenging.
Bernie insists her success with the mental health fight is due to the love and support she receives from family and friends.
She insists, failure is not a word used in her vocabulary. If, plans do not go her to a plan, she looks at the outcome as a lesson, to maybe do things differently in future.
She does however, see failure when the world Governments stand back and ignore homelessness, hunger and poverty in their own countries, including the UK.
Her motivation comes from number of sources; such as the love she receives from her husband & daughter, the weather, the kiss she receives on her face from the sun, the cold and freshness of the rain, the crunchy noise of the leaves in the autumn woods.
Bernie runs a group specifically for individuals who experience mental illness, the message is empowerment – it’s about encouraging independence and a real Love of life.
Just Listening to You meets twice a week. They meet every Friday morning from 10am in Highcliffe Close, Wickford and every Wednesday from 10am in Southend, Essex.
